Kepel, a professor at Sciences Po, has been at the forefront of international discussion of political Islam since the publication of his Jihad in 2000. After the Charlie Hebdo attacks, he wrote that the killers paid little heed to the difficulties they would cause French Muslims. His new books ask whether a new generation of French politicians with roots in the Maghreb might heal the country’s social divisions.
