Edwin G Lucas: An Individual Eye
City Art Centre, Edinburgh, 4th August to 10th February 2019
In 2013 the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art acquired five paintings by the almost unknown Scottish painter Edwin G Lucas. These revealed a distinctive sensibility, responsible for a body of highly inventive figurative paintings. Five years on, the City Art Centre is giving Lucas a full retrospective. Born in Leith in 1911, Lucas was a self-taught painter, who worked as a civil servant. In the mid 1930s, he met modernist painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, then a student, and came under the sway of surrealism, which stimulated over a decade of experimentation.

Whitechapel Gallery, 31st July to 30th September
The AFI programme is a heroic ongoing enterprise, initiated by the Whitechapel in 2008. During the annual season, the gallery screens three artists’ films from three different regions each month. August’s three films—Machine Matter (2007), Star (2017) and First Person Shooter (2016)—by artists from Bangladesh, Poland and the United States, offer us insights into very different worlds.

Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh, 26th July to 20th October
On Christmas Eve 1968, Bill Anders, crewman of NASA’s Apollo 8, took what has become an iconic image: Earthrise. The 50th anniversary of the image has inspired an exhibition of art works documenting our obsession with the heavens and the idea of space flight. In partnership with the University of Edinburgh, this jewel of a show encompasses works from the 17th century to this year.
