Tom Watson, the man at the heart of the campaign against Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, has quit his role as Labour’s election coordinator following the Unite scandal. Unite’s Len McCluskey has put the events down to a Tory smear campaign. Tory chairman Grant Shapps turned it around on Miliband, saying Mr Watson's resignation represented a "clear vote of no confidence in Ed Miliband's weak leadership from the man he brought in to run his campaign." Nick Robinson has said this is the "most serious crisis" Ed Miliband has faced since he became party leader in 2010, beating out his brother David for the seat.  .

In an interview in Prospect last year, Watson told James Macintyre: “I really admire Ed Miliband and I believe in him and I owe him a debt of great loyalty.

But Watson remains active on his pet project, overthrowing Rupert Murdoch. It’s been exactly two years since revelations about the hacking of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s phone made Watson’s campaign front-page news.

Also this week, Watson and other MPs have called for police to question Murdoch after a secret recording revealed the moguls' regrets over cooperating with the Leveson Inquiry. In the recording, made in March, Murdoch reassured journalists that his successor would continue to uphold their practices.
