We’re looking for a freelance sub-editor

Prospect is one of the UK’s leading magazines for long-form journalism, publishing daily online and 10 times a year in print. From in-depth economic analysis to investigative reporting, book reviews to opinion pieces, our stories are diverse, engaging and thought-provoking, united by our strong reputation for rigour and accuracy.

Prospect is seeking an experienced freelance subeditor to help ensure our journalism meets the highest standards of factual accuracy and readability. As subeditor you will fact-check, proofread and correct features and articles in our print magazine—alongside occasional online pieces. 

This role will require a mix of attendance at our office in Westminster and remote working. Some flexibility with working hours through the month is advantageous. 

Key responsibilities

  • To fact-check and sub-edit magazine content including features, columns and other pieces per single issues. There are usually around 20 pieces an issue increasing to around 30 on double issues (published in summer and winter)
  • Ensuring copy adheres to Prospect’s house style
  • Writing headlines, standfirsts and image captions
  • Raising potential legal queries and reputational risks as they arise

 

Requirements 

  • Previous experience of working at a national newspaper or magazine
  • Exemplary editing skills and grammar
  • Experience of Adobe InCopy
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Organised and confident working to quick turnarounds

 

Desirable 

  • Familiarity with InDesign and other Adobe Creative Suite software
  • Some flexibility in working hours, including very occasional weekends and evenings 
  • Familiarity with the WoodWing production system
