Correction: many thanks to our readers who have pointed out errors made in the conversion of some of these units. Crude oil is in fact currently priced at around 30 pence per litre, while Chanel No. 5 can't be got for much less than £780 per litre. Errors were introduced during the conversion of a previous version of the diagram to its current incarnation. Our apologies.
The diagram shows how much it costs, approximately, to obtain a litre of a variety of different liquids in Britain. The diagram was inspired by a post on the blog ReflectionOf.Me, and shows printer ink coming in above even human blood, at over ten times the cost of Champagne. Chanel No 5 is three times less costly per litre than black printer ink, while crude oil isn’t even twice as pricey as mineral water.
