In April last year, Rifkin published The Zero Marginal Cost Society, in which he considered the implications for capitalism as the marginal cost of production tends towards zero—such as, the cost of producing one more copy of a digital magazine. Rifkin sees in the “internet of things,” the connecting via the internet of household appliances, phones and other devices, the dawn of a third industrial revolution. Not everyone is as optimistic about the digital future as is Rifkin.
