China, the United States, India and Russia are the world’s dominant energy users. This is a reflection in part of their large populations and, in the case of China and India, a growing, increasingly energy-hungry middle class.

The measure used here is million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), a unit defined as the amount of energy released by burning one tonne of crude oil. Those four countries each consume well in excess of 500 Mtoe each year.

Two European countries feature in the global Top 10 energy consuming countries—Germany (305 Mtoe) and France (246 Mtoe).

The UK consumption figures, bottom right, provide an illustration of where energy consumption is directed.

By fuel type, petroleum dominates accounting for nearly half (47.5 per cent) of all use. By user, transport (37.5 per cent) is the single biggest consumer followed by domestic (27 per cent) and other industries (15.5 per cent).
