The noughties remembered: top moments of fleeting plausibility

As I wrote in the January issue of Prospect, this has been a decade where we have allowed ourselves to believe the silliest, most implausible narratives. Here are eight of the best:

1. Megawoosh: As with countless ads, this one is far more interesting than the product – in this case Microsoft Office – that it’s trying to sell.

2. Ronaldinho:
Of course it’s real. Billy the Fish used to pull off stunts like this all the time.

3. Lonelygirl15: Too slick by half.

4. SuBo: Watch the dollar signs light up in Simon’s teeth.

5. Balloon boy: The movie Up, rewritten by Ian McEwan.

6. Cocktails: Is it more shocking that they’d fake the stunts, or that they clearly all aspire to be Tom Cruise?

7. Berlusconi: And then of course, there’s the hoax allegation that may well turn out to be a hoax itself.

8. Blair: Oh dear
